  • Forget about Scotland? Can't be done! It shares an island and a government with England, but it's a whole 'nother place: history, customs, and that accent set it worlds apart. Two options let you choose between a vibrant urban campus and a beautiful pastoral retreat. Be forewarned: someone will try to get you to eat haggis and deep-fried candy bars no matter where you go!

Glasgow is Scotland's largest and hippest city, a place where Celtic culture, Victorian architecture, and European techno-trance clubs share a postal code. The local museums offer the best of Scottish art and culture with free admission, and the rejuvenated restaurant scene has international as well as New Scottish cuisine. With two national league teams and several lesser clubs, Glasgow's a major soccer town - go catch a match. The University of Glasgow's 17,000 students enjoy over a hundred clubs, two student centers, and an indoor sports complex. And the Scottish Highlands, Loch Lomond, and Scotland's cool capital, Edinburgh, are all within weekend-trip distance.

If you know golf, you probably know St. Andrews, the coastal town where the game was born. It's still home to one of the world's most beautiful courses. But it's also the location of the University of St. Andrews, Scotland's oldest university (founded in 1411!). Because it's a small school in a small town (6,000 undergraduates, in a town of 16,000!), St. Andrews students make their own fun: whether it's dances or wacky campus traditions, like the costumed Kate Kennedy Procession, Raisin Weekend, and the ice-breaking May Morning Dip. Sports and recreational clubs, academic and political societies, and performing arts groups help fill the calendar. Even if you don't like golf, there are beaches, hiking, and ATV trails close to campus, along with the usual range of options for great nights out on the town.
