Britain: Theater Design
Term: Fall/Spring
Language: English
Housing: Student apartments with kitchen

At the Globe, a modern replica of Shakespeare’s original theater, performances are staged as in Elizabethan times—without lighting, elaborate scenery, or cushy seats for the audience, so the actors must be good!

Designers from colleges nationwide will apprentice with the pros for a semester in London. In private studios backstage, you’ll complete and present project designs for costumes and sets, based on the Globe stage. London theater professionals act as directors for each project, meeting regularly with you. In addition, experts in model making and costume construction conduct special training classes. You will need to submit a portfolio as part of your application.

Course Highlights:
Course work features design, text analysis, project presentation, life drawing, a designer’s studio class, and a designer’s practicum.
You’ll also take stage combat and movement classes with the actors to deepen your understanding of design needs in these areas (plus they’re fun!).
To supplement your courses, you'll attend plays, opera, dance, and concerts, as well as excursions to the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, and the British Museum. A longer trip to Stratford-upon-Avon is also included.
