South Africa gets a lot of press, but this is one country
you can’t just read about in the papers. A fusion of
African, European, and Asian influences, South Africa is a
nation of social diversity, as well as physical
variety—from rugged mountains to deserts to tropical
beaches.The small city of Pietermaritzburg
encapsulates this multiplicity. Head downtown to mingle with the town’s
mostly Zulu population and walk among colonial Victorian
buildings, Hindu temples, and Asian shops selling cheap
spicy snacks.
Out in your free time, wander the National
Botanical Gardens and see why Pietermaritzburg is known as the “City of
Flowers.” Grab dinner while you’re out (meals are
pleasantly inexpensive here) or stop for some pastry after
visiting the famous Tatham Art Gallery. On weekends, you
can head to the coast for some of the world’s best surfing.
Or if you crave some big-city time, it’s an hour to Durban,
South Africa’s second-largest metropolis.
Expect warthogs, lions, and giraffes on the group trips,
because nearby game preserves offer hikes, picnics, and
unbeatable animal watching. For longer adventures, you can
make your way to Capetown, the Valley of a Thousand Hills,
the Drakensberg Mountains, or even to distant parts of
Africa. Then, come home and write your own story.
