St. Petersburg:
City as Monument
Term: Summer Semester
Language: English and Russian (no previous Russian required)
Housing: Shared room in a dormitory suite with kitchen access and a cafeteria
Credits: 6 credits in Russian and 3 credits in Russian Culture

Built on a group of islands separated by numerous canals and rivers, St. Petersburg is often referred to as the Venice of the North. As a port city, many bridges are raised at night to allow merchant ships into port.

Want to relearn your ABCs? The Russian alphabet is written in Cyrillic, an alphabet used by many Eastern European and Central Asian countries. In this six week intensive program, you will develop your language skills in Russian and use the city as a platform for learning about the literature, history, art, politics, and culture of St. Petersburg.

Course Highlights:
Language classes will meet five mornings a week (6 credits). In the afternoons, a complementing course entitled "St. Petersburg in Literature and History" will be taught in English by Rutgers faculty. This course will meet 4 days a week (3 credits), with at least one day a week devoted to excursions.

You'll visit literary museums, walk in the footsteps of Raskolnikov, tour famous palaces and the estates of the tsars and nobility, and visit the Piskaryovskoe Cemetary, a monument to the more than 500,000 people who perished during the 900 day Nazi Siege of Leningrad. Other more distant destinations such as Peterhof, Tsarskoe Selo, or Pavlovsk will be scheduled on weekends. We'll also visit with a contemporary poet. You'll be able to make arrangements to travel to Moscow on your own. More information can be found by clicking here.

Led by Profs. Svetlana McCoy-Rusanova and Gerald Pirog, from the Department of Germanic, Russian and East European Languages and Literatures and Jochen Helbeck from the History Department.

Intensive language training equivalent to two semesters of Russian at home.

  • Добро пожаловать! That's "Welcome" in Russian. Borsch, ballet, and Bolsheviks aren't the only things that Russia is famous for. Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, the city's architectural gems and urban design rival any European city's. With its countless canals, impressive palaces, and royal gardens it's no wonder St. Petersburg is a favorite destination for people who love food, beauty, and friendly people.

White Nights: For a few precious weeks in the summer, around the time of the Summer Solstice, St. Petersburg, one of the northernmost cities in the world, does not get truly dark at night. With all this extra light it’s time to celebrate! And there will indeed be plenty of festivities, including the world famous White Nights Festival at the magnificent Mariinsky Theater. Imagine walking the local canals and streets at midnight in near daylight! With all the magic of St. Petersburg in the summer you’ll quickly come to love Russia’s “window to the West.”
