Why is the
American Pilgrim Museum in Leiden?
Because the Pilgrims spent over a decade in the Netherlands after they left England, before they sailed for the New World!

When you study in Leiden, you can’t help but feel a bit
sophisticated. As the former world-champions of commerce,
colonialism, and industry, the Dutch have been around the
global block. From the neighborhood market to national
foreign policy, the Dutch tend to view life through worldly-colored glasses.
Yes, you were expecting fantastic tulip fields and landscapes dotted with historic
windmills, but what about boat tours through the city’s canals, five national museums,
and scenic beaches? They’re all just a short ride away, so get on that bike and find
something new to do!
Leiden’s only 40 minutes from Amsterdam by
train, but it’s more than just a suburb of the nation’s capital. Home to
Holland’s oldest university and one of Europe’s top
schools, Leiden is every inch a college town. Biking and
walking—in that order—are the preferred modes of travel, so
use your leg power to check out the inexpensive bistros or
interesting cultural events. University-arranged
accommodations will help you meet Dutch classmates and
other international students, so you’ll have new friends to
explore with.
