 | | Moroccan food is fabulous ... world class! It was Paula Wolfert who first introduced Americans to this cuisine in her 1973 best-selling cookbook Couscous and Other Good Food From Morocco. In researching her book, Wolfert spend over eight years immersed in Moroccan life, culture, food and cookery. In her view, Moroccan food is so great because it rests on four classic pillars: a rich land, a diversity of cultural influences, a great civilization, and a refined palace life. That's Morocco, all right! | | | | | This summer program consists of three 4-week sessions focusing on intensive modern standard Arabic, at all levels from beginning through advanced. Morocco is an exciting, vibrant, marvelous mélange - of peoples, languages, cultures, and religions. The population is Arab and Berber. The state religion is Sunni Islam, but additionally there is a Jewish minority, the latter primarily in Casablanca. Moroccan culture is a tapestry with many threads, most prominently Arab, African, Andalusian, and French.
Rabat, your host city and the nation’s capital, is perched on the Atlantic Ocean, in proximity to Gibraltar, Spain, and Portugal. Its white buildings, shimmering against the blue sky and sea, make a dazzling impression. In the 12th and 13th centuries Rabat became the key fortified center of the Almohad Empire, and imposing monuments and ruins of this age remain to this day. The Moroccan royal family still resides there in a splendid palace complex. The oldest quarter of the city (the “medina”) is a maze of shops, with a plethora of items on sale, including pottery, leather goods, fabrics, jewelry, antiques, and the most beautiful vegetables in the world! You’ll also find here the most traditional coffee and tea houses in the city.
All in all, if your aim is to spend a part of your summer working hard to master Arabic, with native teachers who take Arabic-language instruction very seriously, in one of the loveliest parts of the entire Arab Mediterranean world, then ... welcome aboard! There's no better way to make rapid progress in the language, and have a cultural experience you'll remember your whole life.
