  • On any ol’ trip to Costa Rica, you can bask on Caribbean beaches, tour rainforest ecopreserves, and taste the freshest pineapple this side of paradise. But at St. Mark’s School in Limón, you’ll also teach, learn, and make a lasting difference in the lives of grade school children. This summer service learning program will earn you 6 credits, and it just might change your life.

Many people in Limón have an English-speaking Afro- Caribbean heritage, but the dominance of Spanish is making English increasingly rare. Enter you: you’ll collaborate with teachers at St. Mark’s School to introduce games, music, books, movies, and other activities to make speaking English fun. No Spanish? No problemo! Your role is to immerse the local students in your authentic “American” English.

Sample the local bananas, papayas, and java at the central market in your downtime, or head to your local too-blue lagoons. Brave the nearby hiking trails and whitewater rapids, or just beat the heat with an afternoon siesta in your room at St. Mark’s hotel, right across the street from the school.

Costa Rica is the place to be—and your teaching contribution will be a gift that keeps on giving, long after you’ve come home.
