Welcome to Gallia Belgica, the Roman province which Julius Caesar had a hand in carving out,
back in 57 B.C. Modern Belgium shares borders with France, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands, and is linked to Great Britain by direct rail
service, the high-speed Eurostar. With such a central location, you'll be sure to experience all that Europe has to offer! And don't be worried if
you can't hold a conversation in Dutch, French, or German, since most students can converse in English as well. As for food, Belgian cuisine runs the
gamut from fine and refined, to hearty down home cooking. You'll love the famous chocolates, waffles, and mussels & frites (aka "French fries," which
the Belgians invented!). For a laugh, join the locals in devouring their favorite and legendary comic book - Tintin!
Brussels is home to NATO, the European Union (EU), and many other international businesses and organizations. It's also a splendid city, abounding
in parks, wonderful monuments, and outdoor cafés. The central market square ("Grote Markt" or "Grand Place") is a stunning ensemble of 15th-17th
Century buildings, and every other August is completely covered with a huge display of begonia flowers.
The arts and music scene in Brussels is one of the liveliest in Europe. Live music is everywhere, and if you have an ear for jazz, this is
one of its world capitals! The saxophone, after all, was invented in Belgium!
