  • Here’s your chance to visit a rugged country that started as a penal colony.
Stay a while in a city with unique style, vibrant nightlife, and cosmopolitan “cultcha.” Everyone leaves Oz with a tan, but with three different programs to choose from, you’re guaranteed to return home with much more than an annoying fake accent! Kangaroos and koalas? Been there, done that! Take pictures of the dingoes, bandicoots, and sugar gliders. And don’t forget to bring home some vegemite, mate!

Each program below is Australian for “awesome,” so your only real problem is picking one.

The University of Melbourne’s campus is just minutes away from downtown, so you’ll be smack dab in the middle of one of the world’s best cities. Even the student center is all that, offering food from pizza to sushi and a free music library, where you can slip on some headphones and kick back in a beanbag chair. Campus clubs fit every interest, from the African Drumming Club to the way-popular Chocolate Lovers Society. And classes on Outback ecology or contemporary Aussie culture give you a real insider’s view.

If beautiful days distract you, DON’T go to the University of Queensland. It’s a world-class school, but the lush campus of botanical gardens—plus 300 days of sunshine a year—will tempt you to ask, “Can we have class outside?” a lot! UQ features courses from A-Aboriginal Studies to Z- Zoology. The cutting-edge “cybrary”/café lets you espresso yourself while you study from any of the two million digital books. Take the CityCat speedboat taxi to downtown Brisbane, a thriving opolis even Aussies call “laid back.” For outdoor adventures, explore the South Bank parklands, laze on the “diamond-sand” beaches of Moreton Bay, or go snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia’s most famous natural wonder.

Just outside of Sydney, the innovative Macquarie University sits in parklands on the banks of Macquarie Pond. Progressive and international in scope, this uni offers liberal arts courses from International Television to Coral Reef Dynamics—something unique for every major! You’ve got the nearby Blue Mountains for hiking, beaches for surfing, and … oh yeah, Sydney, Australia’s oldest city. See the Harbor Bridge and the Opera House—featured in dozens of movies—or just enjoy the museums, shopping, fusion cuisine, and nightlife.
