The Program
  • Develop your professional skills by interning at one of a wide variety of companies in the bustling Catalan city of Barcelona
  • Expand your professional network and learn critical skills necessary for the increasingly globalized international job market
  • Gain deeper understanding of your personal strengths and career goals
  • Expand your academic knowledge within your field of study
  • Through coursework, language training, homestays, company visits, and an internship, you’ll increase your understanding of the international working environment while improving your Spanish communication skills

Your Host City: Barcelona

The capital of Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain with its own history, culture, and language, Barcelona is nestled between mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. Its idyllic location is just one of the things that attracts millions of visitors each year. Walk through the city and observe 2,000 years of architectural history - from Roman remains to a network of narrow streets in the Old Town –  and how they contrast to the ultramodern showpieces that continue to redesign its skyline.

A for-credit internship is at the core of this program. Based on your experience, interests, and current studies, you’ll be placed with a startup, local business, international organization, or NGOs, where you’ll spend 100 hours interning, gaining hands-on professional experience and practicing your Spanish language skills.

You’ll be guaranteed an unpaid internship placement at a local business or organization, where you’ll work up to 30 hours a week. CIEE will work with you to find the closest placement match between your professional and personal goals with what’s available in Barcelona.

Sample industry sectors include:
  • Architecture
  • Communication
  • Corporate Finance
  • Education
  • Environmental Studies
  • Event Planning
  • Investment and Real Estate
  • Logistics
  • Marketing
  • Sports Consulting
**Please note: Exact internship is determined through personalized placement process for each student.***

Total credit: 6 semester hours.

Students with 0-4 semesters of Spanish take their internship seminar and placement in English. Students with 5 or more semesters of Spanish may chose a placement in Spanish.

In addition to interning, students are required to take:
  • An internship seminar, which meets on a weekly basis
  • A Spanish language class at their level.
You will be placed in an internship within your sector but the final placement site is dependent upon which company selects you. Having an international internship experience is a wonderful addition to your resume. By paying the program deposit students are acknowledging their commitment to this professional experience. CIEE will work closely with business partners and organizations to arrange a placement within your chosen field. However, placement within a specific organization is never guaranteed, nor is it reason to be released from the parameters of the withdrawal policy.

As a global intern in Barcelona, you’ll work in a non-paying position within a wide range of opportunities across a diverse set of innovative industries. Co-curricular excursions and cultural activities in and around Barcelona complement your coursework and immerse you in the history and culture of the city.
