Program Description:
ghana2Ghana is the first sub Saharan African country to retrieve its independence from European colonial authorities.  It is on the western coast of Africa and is composed of a myriad of cultures, histories and landscapes. Though English is the official language of Ghana, there are 45 languages spoken in this country.   Ghana boasts a long and varied coastline dotted with the castles and forts, the Volta River and its spectacular lake, the Akosombo Hydroelectric Dam, a rich rainforest, and a vast savannah.  Culturally, Ghana is a land of diverse festivals, music, and traditional dances.  Its many festivals include thrilling parades of Chiefs and Queen Mothers in decorated palanquins, shaded by traditional umbrellas, and supported by drummers and warriors with ancient muskets.

Accra is the capital of Ghana.  Before the 16th century, Accra was the city of the Ga people.  Today, it boasts an amalgamation of tradition from the native tribes of the Akan, Ga, Ewe, Guan and Dagomba, and from the European colonists of Portugal, the Netherlands and England. Accra is Ghana’s governing and cultural capital.  It is home to the National Museum, the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, the National Archives of Ghana, the National Theatre, Ghana’s central library, the Makola Market and the Christianborg Castle. The University of Ghana, is located in Legon, approximately 10 miles northeast of Accra.  Legon has a slower pace of life than central Accra, yet it still retains a vibrant atmosphere.
