Program Description:
kth3Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union—it is located on the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe, bordered by Norway and Finland, and connected to Denmark by a bridge.  Evidence of Sweden’s Viking and Medieval past can be found throughout the countryside in the form of monuments and gravesites.  Despite its Viking past, today’s Sweden is a peaceful country.  Known for its political neutrality, Sweden often acts as the mediator to opposing countries and is home to the famous Nobel Peace Prize.  Though its northern geographic location may imply otherwise, central and southern Sweden have surprisingly temperate climates. Both the natural beauty of the land (think clear blue waters, forest, lakes, and mountains) and the man-made beauty of its urban centers (Stockholm, Gottenburg, and Uppsala, to name a few) are equally important and impressive to see.

Stockholm is Sweden’s capital and with over 1.8 million residents—its largest city.  The city is located on 14 islands all connected by bridges in Lake Malaren. Outside of Stockholm and into the Baltic Sea is the Stockholm archipelago which comprises some 24,000 islands that can be explored by ferry.  Dating as far back as the 12th century, Stockholm is a combination of old world charm and modern vitality.  Stroll through Gamla Stan, the old area of Stockholm to delight in the cobblestone streets, stucco buildings, the Royal Palace, and the Swedish Parliament. For a more modern and trendy Stockholm experience visit Sodermalm, an area known for its restaurants, cafes, boutiques, and specialty shops. Places to see include the Royal Palace, Drottingholm Palace and the Vasa Museum which houses an almost fully intact 17th century warship.
