The Program
  • Hong Kong University of Science & Technology’s (HKUST) School of Science offers a wide range of courses, including Life Science, Mathematics, and Physics. As an international student, you’ll get priority in enrollment for classes in the School of Science
  • As an international student at HKUST, you will also be able to enroll in courses outside the School of Science, subject to space and instructor permission. What’s more, you can take advantage of Chinese language classes before trying out your new skills on the streets and in the restaurants
  • The main HKUST campus is located in an idyllic setting on Clearwater Bay, accessible from Hong Kong Island by subway and bus
Your Host City: Hong Kong
Thirteen years after its reunification with mainland China, Hong Kong has adjusted well to its new status as a Special Administrative Region (SAR). The former British colony on the South China Sea is today one of the world’s most densely populated areas, home to some seven million people. According to the principle of ‘One country, two systems,’ Hong Kong maintains a different political system from the mainland, with an independent judiciary and an emerging multi-party system. The city also remains one of the world’s financial centers, as evidenced by its high-rise skyline.  Public transport in Hong Kong, whether by ferry, subway, bus or tram, is first-class while connections to China and South East Asia are equally good. As if all of that weren’t enough, many people consider Hong Kong to be the best place in the world for Chinese food.

Academics
In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology website.

HKUST School of Science offers a great variety of courses in life science, mathematical and physical science. Visiting students are free to enroll in courses across disciplines and will have priority in taking courses offered by the School of Science. For courses offered in other Schools, it will be subject to the course quota and approval of the course instructor.  The full course catalogue and can found here.  Visiting students are also able to take Chinese language courses.  Relevant information will be available close to the start of each semester or once the student arrives.

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to both HKUST and Rutgers University.  That means you will need to take at least 12 credits each semester. The credit translation system between HKUST and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at HKUST will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript.  Students can expect to take approximately 15 credits per semester.  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.
