Program Description:

EBS 1 As the continent’s most populated and industrial country, Germany stands at the heart of both Europe and the European Union. It’s a country with a proud intellectual and cultural tradition, the birthplace of the philosophers Kant, Nietzsche, and Heidegger, the composers Beethoven and Bach, and the writers Goethe, Thomas Mann, and Hermann Hesse, not to mention Einstein. Germany is also rich in natural and man-made attractions, from the Black Forest, the Rhine, and the Alps, to 21st-century Berlin, Europe’s new cultural capital, Frankfurt, and Munich. Having absorbed the pain of reunification, Germany is now forging ahead as a global economic powerhouse. Come and discover for yourself the secret of the Germans’, and Europe’s, success.

Oestrich-Winkel is a picturesque town of some 12,000 inhabitants located on the banks of the Rhine in southwest Germany.  The town’s main landmark is an 18th-century wine-loading crane—this is a famous German wine region—that stands on the waterfront. Annual events include wine and jazz festivals. From Oestrich-Winkel it’s a mere 10 miles to Mainz, the city that was home to Johannes Gutenberg, the 15th-century printmaker. Mainz also boasts a cathedral, several art museums, and a top-tier German soccer team.  For a more metropolitan atmosphere, Frankfurt, Germany’s financial hub, is easily reachable by road or rail.
