Program Description:

Jordan 3Strategically located in the heart of the Middle East, the Kingdom of Jordan has a population of around six million. Jordan is a welcoming, moderate country that has close ties to the United States as well as diplomatic relations with Israel. It is a constitutional monarchy, with executive authority vested in the King (currently Abdullah II) and his council of ministers.

In economic terms, Jordan is one of the freest and most competitive economies in the Middle East, with a booming banking sector. The country also boasts a wealth of historic attractions, including the Nabatean city of Petra, the Roman city of Jerash, Al Karak, an important Crusader castle, and Wadi Rum, famous for its association with Lawrence of Arabia. The official languages of Jordan are English and Modern Standard Arabic.

Amman, the capital of Jordan, lies between the desert and the fertile Jordan Valley and is said to be built on seven hills. At its heart is the Citadel, where you can see Roman remains as well as the traces left by several other civilizations. Amman’s population is equally diverse, comprising Jordanians, but also Palestinian, Kuwaiti, and Iraqi immigrants who have fled to Jordan as a safe haven.

The best way to practice your Arabic numbers is by haggling in the city’s bazaars. The Gold Souq, in downtown Amman, is renowned for its gold and silver work. For an ancient city, Amman has a surprisingly modern feel, with burgeoning retail, restaurant, and nightlife scenes.
