Program Description:
The AMIDEAST Egypt program has been suspended from 2014 through the present term.

The Program
  • AMIDEAST/Egypt, founded in 1956, is its longest-running organization, and one of the leading education institutions in Cairo.
  • In this program students take relevant courses related to the Middle East, Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian Arabic from leading Egyptian faculty.
  • Students also have the opportunity to study political science, economics, religion, sociology, and Egyptology.
  • In addition to academics, students benefit from structured ways to meet local Egyptian students, service-learning opportunities, and organized excursions to breathtaking locations such as upper Egypt (including the Valley of the Kings) and the Siwa Oasis.
Your Host City: Cairo
Cairo, the Egyptian capital, is a noisy, crowded, hectic, colorful, thoroughly captivating experience.  It’s also the ideal place to practice your Arabic, both on the streets and in hundreds of wonderful Cairo cafés. You could easily spend whole days strolling through the teeming bazaars (souqs) in search of a souvenir carpet, a pair of shoes, or maybe even a camel!  Khan Al-Khalili, one of the oldest bazaars in the world, is a great place to test your haggling skills.  But you’ll also want to explore the majestic Islamic and Coptic architecture of the city. And no Egyptologist, archeologist or pharaoh-lover will want to miss Cairo’s Egyptian Museum with its mummies, sarcophagi, death-masks, and other ancient relics. Once you’ve toured the museum, the Great Pyramid of Giza and the Sphinx are only a taxi-ride away.

In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the AMIDEAST Egypt website.  In addition to Arabic Language Courses, AMIDEAST also offers courses in political science, economics, religion, sociology, and Egyptology.  More information about these programs can be found on the AMIDEAST Egypt web page.

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to AMIDEAST and Rutgers University.  Students are required to take 14-17 credits per semester. All students enroll in Arabic and two or three other Area studies courses (depending on the student’s preference) from  a variety of disciplines taught in English.  The credit translation system between AMIDEAST and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course on the AMIDEAST program will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript.  It is not possible to take classes not-for-credit, nor is it possible to take classes as Pass/Fail (unless the course is an internship and you receive prior approval).

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.
