Lake Turkana, the largest desert lake in the world, is called the Jade Sea because of its spectacular color and is also home to the largest breeding population of Nile Crocodiles in the world. You can't get any wilder than this!

Koobi Fora is literally in the middle of nowhere—but it is the epicenter of paleoanthropology research. The volcanic sediments in this arid region have yielded some of the most important hominid fossils and it continues to be the place to be for budding archeologists and prehistoric buffs. This program is the preeminent field based program in paleoanthropology in the world-training literally hundreds of students in paleonanthropological fieldwork. These hands-on courses at the Koobi Fora Field School gives you a unique opportunity to learn the basics of paleoanthropological fieldwork with some instruction in primatology as well at one of the most amazing places on earth.

Course Highlights:
Your adventure will start in Nairobi, where you’ll have unprecedented access to the National Museum of Kenya, its collection and its researchers.
Next you’ll spend a few days studying the ecology of African savannas at Mugie Ranch, a private wildlife preserve where you’ll learn about the plants, animals, climate, and geology of the environments around you.
Then it’s off to Koobi Fora where you'll find yourself engaged in intensive lectures and field courses and working along side an international pool of research scientists. If you want to study botany, we got it! Or, you may be interested in animal behavioral ecology. We have that too! There isn't another place like Koobi Fora in the world, nor is there another field program like the Koobi Fora Field School. Come join us on our adventure!

This program isn’t for everyone, but it might be perfect for you. You’ll be living in your own tent, and though the program will provide the food and water, you’ll want to bring your own munchies! You might not see herds of zebra or oryx every day, but at night you’ll see the occasional hippo as well as millions of stars you never knew were up there. There is often an optional week-long, post-program trip, so before you face the culture shock of returning, you’ll have time to hike the Kenyan mountains or relax on the beaches of Africa’s east coast. So for a travel and learning experience that’s out there—waaaay out there—think Koobi Fora!
